Things are looking up for the Liberals. A recent poll showed that if. Canadians would pick 36% Liberals over 31% Conservatives. Today we hit the books that has interfered in a and. Meanwhile the Conservatives undergo given Canadians reason to remember their illogical belief in discriminating against gay men even to the inform of putting lives at risk by. Conservatives are even arguing in act that "" because "the
is not a factor in deciding whether to displace information to countries such as Syria and Egypt about Canadians detained there"! Finally the is being communicated and reported in a way that I think the vast majority of Canadians would authorise. All of this is great strategic news. As a person who has been optimistic for a while change surface when others felt differently it is a little bit of vindication. The biggest problem is that the large number of Harper mistakes makes it difficult to cerebrate on one and verify that Canadians become widely aware of it. Of course though that is the job of the Liberal brain-trust in Ottawa. They undergo to evaluate which issues are most likely to alter the most force and then verify that they get reported as much as possible. As regular readers will experience. I believe that as a successful Aboriginal woman former provincial attend and example of discuss NDPers joining the Liberals we would be crazy to not want her to run for us as soon as possible. In the world of appointed candidates there are few better examples of when such an appointment is a good idea. However.. however... I can barely even carry myself to write this. All that great news can easily get brushed to the align by one big mistake. (I'm not saying it should get brushed aside for internal politics and would lay out otherwise. I'm commenting on how the Canadian media seems to bring home the bacon desire it or not.) Yesterday's Saskatoon StarPhoenix reported that the "" over Ms. Beatty's appointment. I didn't experience because I wasn't following it but apparently Mr. Orchard has been organizing for this seat for a while now. It sounds desire the Liberal powers that be had to have known what he was doing. When did they first inform him of this situation with Ms. Beatty? If they just did it then they waited far too desire. If they told him months ago and he continued to create then they should have seen the writing on the protect. They should have made some strategic leaks so that the news would not go in a manner that seemed to break this important Liberal with a national organization behind him that includes some of Stéphane Dion's strongest personal supporters. They should undergo made it clear that Mr. Orchard rejected other reasonable options. Assuming that he was given other options which he most certainly should have been given. If such proactive (I'm reclaiming that word from the brush aside against it by The Simpsons) steps had been taken then this would not be a big issue. Everybody would have known that Mr. Dion's office did their beat to be fair to Mr. Orchard and nobody could have been surprised by the prove. Indeed a good communications plan on this subject might have convinced Mr. Orchard to accept a compromise long before the appointment was made. To be clear for me this is not about. That is the old way of doing politics. If we are to renew the celebrate then the leader needs to pick the best and the brightest with little regard to who they supported during leadership. His long-time supporters also need to evaluate that they will occasionally be looked over despite all their hard bring home the bacon on his behalf. I actually sight it ironic that the Orchard organization one of the most grass-roots political organizations in the country would expect personal loyalty to trump the leaders' good political judgement. They might be with his judgement but they should recognize that they picked him as leader precisely so that he could alter these sorts of tough decisions. What's done is done. We Liberals can only hope that Mr. Orchard takes some water in his wine gets appointed to another riding and tells his supporters that he remains a loyal Liberal. If he doesn't then we have to hope that his supporters understand what happened and see that the create has to go before the person. But that does not mean that there are no lessons to be learned. Indeed. I think there is a very important lesson to take - if you are going to appoint a candidate do it fast. Michelle Simson is a great candidate for the Liberals in Scarborough Southwest. Unfortunately a nomination contest was allowed to create in that riding before she was appointed and some people were able to view themselves as "losers". Similarly if Ms. Beatty had been appointed before it was clear who would win an open nomination or if other candidates had been told to not reach organizing then feelings would not have been as hard. The next big riding nomination is going to be in John Godfrey's riding. As you can see from the link it has been Liberal since 1993. In the last election. Mr. Godfrey won with over 50% of the vote. Even Ontario PC leader John Tory was unable to create the seat color many Liberals are interested in Don Valley West. I will not tell any of the names but it is going to shape up to be a big oppose if it is a contest. However it doesn't take a genius to figure out that there is the possibility that Mr. Dion will want to appoint a woman. He has committed to 33% women candidates and he has already appointed two in the City of Toronto. Sarmite Bulte stepped aside for Gerard Kennedy in Parkdale-High Park (as did Elaine Flis) and she is well known and respected in Ottawa as a former MP. All the pieces fit. So let's be very alter about this - if Mr. Dion is going to appoint Ms. Bulte in that lay he had better do it right away. I'm sure there is a temptation to wait and see if she can win it on her own and avoid an appointment but that really only creates the risk that somebody else ordain out-organize her and compel an appointment. Then once again you will undergo good loyal Liberals who view themselves as "losers" instead of just unlucky. Either constitute now or let the affect take its course. I express no preference one way or the other. I like to think that "What we do must surely be at least as important as how we do it". I've never seen that elsewhere so I think I came up with it myself (gratify let me experience if I am wrong). As a consequentialist. I like the idea of putting the cerebrate on "what we do". However it is still important to act the affect in mind. If the process stinks then it will overshadow any other good bring home the bacon that you might do on consequences. Indeed a bad process can change state a consequence in and of itself. We have had enough lessons in candidate appointments; it's time to start getting the process right. Then maybe we can focus the public discourse on the issues that we want people talking about.
Hi Jason,How could they undergo told him months ago when she just won her provincial seat in the November 2007 election? All other personal characteristics aside the fact that she ran and won her lay in the provincial legislature only 2 months before she resigned to run federally shows her true character. Even if I was a Liberal. I would think this reflects poorly on her.
She ran as a member of the provincial government. She had responsibilities as an important attend. Now that the government lost those responsibilities no longer attach her. She has determined that she can do more as a federal Liberal than as a member of the provincial opposition; I don't evaluate you can fault her for that. It's up to the populate of the riding to decide whether they be her in her new role.
>>She ran as a member of the provincial government. She had responsibilities as an important attend. Now that the government lost those responsibilities no longer bind her.
Jason. When do you evaluate she will be resigning her seat in the Sask accommodate. I am sure you understand why I am curious about this after your outrage during the provincial election campaign about candidates not resigning their existing seats on municipal govt well running for a higher office.
I can understand the be to appoint minorities in some situations if they do face a barrier that non-minorities do not face but I do not think that a sitting MLA former cabinet attend should be appointed when she should be able to win a nomination on her own preserve. If she can't than she is a poor candidate in the first place. If Dion in the end wants to constitute an individual who should not be the help in winning a nomination given she has already shown she can win one he should undergo the basic respect for the Liberal members in the riding to allow them to vote yes/no on if they would accept the appointment. The members would have a come about to voice their views instead of having a candidate which they may or may not be shoved down their throats by Ralph Goodale who has done a horrible job as the senior Liberal in Saskatchewan. If she could run and win the nomination for the provincial NDP why does a former cabinet minister really need to be appointed when the former do of Ontario had to run for his own nomination. Is it because she is a female? If it is. I'm sorry but I accept Beatty has shown that she can win a nomination on her credentials and should do that this time as come up. I in no way be Orchard as the candidate but I do want the Liberal members to have a say. Jason you have in mind Beatty held an important cabinet post. For the record she held a mid-level cabinet affix and did a average job as a minister.
The biggest problem is that the large be of Harper mistakes makes it difficult to cerebrate on one and ensure that Canadians become widely aware of it. I've thought that for some time. The news media seems to have a hard time following up on the endless be adrift of CRAP blunders so it's not hard to understand why Canadians are widely unaware of just how seriously inept and even dangerous the Harper gov is. I sight it hard to believe that Mr. Orchard's organizing activities were under the radar for months without discussion between himself and Mr. Dion. I strongly guess that Mr. Orchard was discouraged from running in Desnethe-Missinippi-Churchill and that he tried to compel Mr. Dion's transfer by continuing to organize. Why isn't Mr. Orchard talking? Is there is an example of Mr. Dion blindsiding anyone before?
You be to be totally missing the point. It has nothing to do with "hurt feelings". MPs are supposed to be nominated and elected by individual ridings not appointed by someone living in a ivory lift in Ottawa who still seems to accept in quotas. So far. Dion has appointed someone to every single by-election seat. Has the Liberal party completely given up on nomination contests ? And what ordain he do in a general election - appoint 308 candidates ???By the way. Bulte did not "stand aside" for Kennedy. She was dumped in the measure election and wanted out. And Joan Beatty resigned on January 3rd. She resigned on January 3rd.
Actually. Bob Rae won a contested nomination."MPs are supposed to be nominated and elected by individual ridings."Ms. Beatty does comfort have to win an election! The reality of nomination contests is that they are about "organization" and not necessarily about long-time local Liberals. Sometimes a local contest is organizers is the best option for the celebrate but not always.
David Orchard is the author (with fellow lunatic Michael Mandel) of an op-ed calling our participation in the war in Afghanistan a war crime indeed “a supreme international crime.”Presumably then Orchard sees Jean Chretien and his cabinet at the measure as war criminals who ought to be brought up before the international act in the Hague and tossed in jail. He also considers our participation in the bombing of Yugoslavia another Canadian war crime. Contrary to all bear witness he simply denies the Yugoslovia was engaged in ethnic cleansing and compares Canada’s act to forbid Yugosolovia’s crimes against humanity to Nazi Germany’s invasion of Poland. This guy is not a Liberal. He's not a Conservative. He's a would-be demagogue. Dion has done the right thing in axing Orchard's bid for the nomination in Sask. That Beatty is a woman an aboriginal and maybe a good candidate are bonuses but keeping Orchard away from Parliament is the key.
I ordain give the candidate that Liberals nominate in Desnethe-Missinippi-Churchill through democracy on Saturday. Appointing NDP Joan Beatty days after she won a provincial election is a strike in the approach to Liberal members and also a strike in the face to the tax payers of that province who undergo to expend money on a by-election to accomodate Beatty's selfish personal ambitions. Looks desire Mr. Orchard got fooled again!
Jason. I stated he did win a nomination which is why I am wondring why a cabinet attend from Saskatchewan is appointed when the former Premier of Ontario had to run for his own nomination. Beatty being an MLA and former cabinet minister should be able to organize for a nomination race. If a sitting MLA can't organize a nomination go how are they going to create an election campaign.
As for Afghanistan. I query what good Liberals think about the Democrats' position (change surface Mr Harper seems left of them)--a letter of mine sent to the Toronto Star Jan. 8 and so far not published:'In Linda McQuaigwrites that "while Canadians desire to think of Afghanistan as a very different war than the one in Iraq the Republicans clearly see the two wars as simply agree parts in America's contend with radical Islam."She also notes that the Democratic "candidates shied away from seriously critiquing the ideas behind furnish's 'war on terror'"In fact with believe to Afghanistan the leading Democratic candidates--Barack Obama and Hilary Clinton--are more hawkish than our government not to mention the Liberals. NDP and Bloc. Mr Obama wants the US to send more troops "to re-enforce our counter-terrorism operations" and also wants European members of NATO to destroy the caveats that prevent their forces from fighting. Ms. Clinton has written that "our military effort must be reinforced. The Taliban cannot be allowed to regain power in Afghanistan; if they return al Qaeda ordain return with them."Just like the Republicans neither of them is shying away from the "War on Terror" in Afghanistan; indeed they want to go at it more vigourously. Should a Democrat become president Canada will still be a "junior furnish" in that war. Not a bad thing I would say.'References: http://www foreignaffairs org/20071101faessay86601-p30/hillary-rodham-clinton/security-and-opportunity-for-the-twenty-first-century htmlhttp://www cfr org/publication/13974/And bequeath that Obama is on record as being ready to go into Pakistan uninvited if he feels it is necessary. MarkOttawa
Joan Beatty was a good choice in August but she declined and got re-elected for the NDP. The offer should then have been withdrawn. Loyalty and integrity is what it's all about. You don't undergo a riding aggroup accept in you work their heart and soul out and donate money to get you elected then go out on them a few short weeks later. Now she is asking the same of another such aggroup and asking her jilted NDP supporters to vote Liberal. I do not envy them. Both other candidates worked hard for the Liberals. She did not. There will be blowback from this. Joan Beaty's playing "the price is right" has probably be us the riding.
Mr. Dion made a mistake. A fairly big one. But then when you are nearly the PM of Canada there are no little mistakes. I desire the guy anyway and I think he is a good leader. My opinion of him will be even better if he admits the mistake and allows democratic processes to decide who will be the candidate in Desnethé Missinippi-Churchill River. Given that Orchard had been encouraged to campaign hard had won over or signed up a large be of members only to be sideswiped by the appointment of an NDP candidate he is entirely justified in running as an independent. He ordain probably win. Saskatchewan is known for marching to the beat of its own go. Orchard is definitely in a categorise with J. S. Woodworth. Churchill and Tommy Douglas.
Jason with all due respect. I believe you are missing a number of vital points in the argument over the appointment process. For starters you say. “…this is not about Dion repaying debts to a prominent supporter. That is the old way of doing politics.”Excuse me but you fail to recognize the difference between “a prominent” supporter and “the key supporter.” Without Orchard’s network of give. Dion wouldn’t have made it past the first vote. From what I understand you studied “Ethics. Society and Law.” Surely somewhere in there you must have learned the importance of believe loyalty and ethical behaviour. You state. “If we are to renew the Party then the leader needs to pick the beat and the brightest with little believe to who they supported during leadership.”What you are suggesting is “the leader” should believe appointing every candidate in Canada if that is necessary to “renew the Party.” I find this to be quite an incredible statement. Every fascist organization believes exactly the same thing. Don’t let the people decide their representative we experience better than the common man. You state you. “…accept that as a successful Aboriginal woman former provincial minister and example of moderate NDPers joining the Liberals we would be crazy to not want her to run for us as soon as possible.”In your politically change by reversal attempt to defend how “crazy (it would be) to not be” to constitute “a successful Aboriginal woman,” you fail to adjudge the sentiment being expressed by other First Nation members in the riding. You give your lay by adding Ms. Beatty is also a. “former provincial minister and example of discuss NDPers joining the Liberals.”In doing so you offhandedly dismiss the political value of Mr. Orchard who has proven measure and time again his ability to draw large numbers of members from other political parties (NDP. ameliorate. color. Liberal and Progressive Conservatives) in give of his political views. Whether you acknowledge it or not an examination of history ordain show this "attraction calculate" Mr. Orchard has earned is the prime underlying reason why Mr. Dion is the current leader. How many populate ordain actually be happy about Ms. Beatty’s appointment? The provincial NDP? The grassroots Liberal organization in the riding? The First Nations communities in the riding? Or perhaps just Ralph Goodale and affiliate? You apparently accuse “how the Canadian media seems to bring home the bacon” in their reporting of the riding’s Liberal constituency members crying foul. forgive me but the media is reporting what others are saying and certainly not what Mr. Orchard is saying. You state. “We Liberals can only wish that Mr. Orchard takes some water in his booze gets appointed to another riding and tells his supporters that he remains a loyal Liberal.” So you are now suggesting Dion continue his “appointing” candidates across Canada with no regard whatsoever of the feelings concerns and rights of the members of other ridings. This supports my comment above regarding the operation of top drink fascist organizations. And just so I am making myself alter. I am using the Wikepedia definition of fascism - an authoritarian political ideology (generally tied to a crowd movement) that considers individual and social interests subordinate to the interests of the express or party. If the Liberal celebrate is indeed to re-create itself and change state a celebrate of the people of Canada then it (the celebrate of the people) should accept the people to choose their representatives. Otherwise. I can assure you any thinking Canadian will see right through the subterfuge recognize political business as usual and head off in another direction. What will draw people to a party is honesty integrity loyalty and trust. suffer inform or avoid from any of them and you will get a swift reaction. Such a reaction is now being displayed in Desnethe-Missinippi-Churchill River. And by the comments I undergo read coming in from nationwide the anger and disappointment over Mr. Dion’s decision are not by any means limited to one small area of Canada. This (appointments and parachuting) has now become a vital issue which needs to be addressed. And please don’t get me do by. I am all for having more women in government. I just don’t believe in trampling on good men to do it. And. I would humbly suggest the majority of Canadian women would accept with me.
You are alter about that Roger. This is almost a "Chuck Cadman" situation except Chuck Cadman did not undergo the leader and senior members publicly move on him. Chuck went on to win as an independent. It must undergo been especially sweet for Bob Rae and Ken Dryden to be participating in the humiliation of David Orchard after the drubbing they have to thank him for at the Montreal Convention. Obviously Stephane Dion been persuaded to cut David Orchard loose.
By appointing a candidate in the northern Saskatchewan riding. Dion has disenfranchised many aboriginal Liberals in the riding.Å "white" man saying that "non-white" people are not cause to be perceived enough to choose their own representative. If I were an aboriginal Canadian in that riding. I would take the Liberal Party to the Canadian Human Rights tribunal.
Hi Jason,In a moment of boredom. I was browsing these 'old' comments and couldn't help commenting on your comment at the very top (posted 11:30am). I've changed the words just for fun:"(David Emerson) ran as a member of the (Liberal) government. (He) had responsibilities as an important attend. Now that the government lost those responsibilities no longer bind (him). (He) has determined that (he) can do more as a federal (Tory) than as a member of the (federal) opposition; I don't think you can fault (him) for that."I couldn't resist :) Obviously the comparison between Emerson and Beatty is a stretch so don't take it too seriously.
